Greenland cruises

Greenland cruises

Experience untold natural wonders up-close and gain cultural insights – Greenland holidays offer a unique perspective on the world.

On a cruise to Greenland, you’ll soon realise that a visit to the world’s largest island is a one-of-a-kind experience. Wildly varied scenery – encompassing huge ice fields, thick forests, snow-capped mountains and much more – will take your breath away, and that’s just the start of the fun.

After you’ve caught your breath, start with a city walk excursion around the capital, Nuuk, showcasing its distinctive architecture, or try Greenlandic specialities on an excursion in a cosy waterside hostel.

The port of Qaqortoq is another must-visit on cruises to Greenland. As the largest town in the country’s south, there’s plenty to do and see, such as city tours that include tastings of traditional Inuit dishes, or a hike around Lake Tasersuaq.

Ilulissat, in western Greenland, houses the Ilulissat Icefjord, which you can view on an excursion that also offers vistas of marine wildlife haven Disko Bay and Sermermiut, an abandoned settlement.

Depart for your journey from Denmark’s buzzy capital, Copenhagen, or German coastal town Warnemünde. Since our Greenland itineraries also visit Iceland, you’ll enjoy another fantastic location on cruises to Iceland and Greenland.

Greenland, a formidable landscape with nearly 95% of the country covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet, is a destination well worth exploring on an MSC Northern Europe cruise.  Greenland is the world’s largest island and it’s located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans.

Roundtrip cruises to Greenland depart from Warnemunde and include sea days for scenic viewing, popular ports of call in Greenland and Iceland, as well as visits to the United Kingdom and Denmark.

On your Greenland cruise you will visit the ports of Nuuk, Illulissat and Qaqortoq and transit the beautiful Prince Christian Sund.

Nuuk, the capital of Greenland is located on the southwest coast of the island. Home to a vibrant lifestyle with restaurants and boutiques, the port city is mix of old traditions and modern culture.

Ilulissat, in the northern part of the country is the land of the icebergs, the crackling and rumbling sounds of which can be heard throughout the town, never letting you forget the beauty that surrounds it. The massive icebergs can best be seen while exploring Disko Bay.

Qaqortoq, rises steeply above the fjords of the city and is the largest town in Southern Greenland. Visiting the hot springs is a popular attraction in Southern Greenland and it is here where you can find the only outdoor heated spa in the country. Relaxing in the warm waters surrounded by views of icebergs and mountain peaks may give new meaning to the “perfect beach day.”

In addition to these quaint ports of call where you can meander through fishing villages, explore the fjords, learn the traditional Inuit culture of the native people and hear stories from the Viking Age. Greenland cruises also includes scenic sailing through Prince Christian Sound. This unmissable highlight can be observed from, from your cabin’s balcony or on the ship’s open decks. As you enter the waterway, your cruise ship will slowly navigate through the fjords system where steep mountains reaching over 1200 meters tower around you. There is one village located in the Prince Christian Sound, Aappilattoq, whose brightly coloured cottages stand out in contrast with the white icebergs that surround you.

Start looking for your ideal Northern Europe itinerary to Greenland today, and enjoy a truly memorable cruising experience with MSC Cruises.

Greenland’s icebergs and icefjords: sub-zero spectaculars

Greenland’s icebergs are a key part of the country’s landscape and geography, and they make breathtaking, eye-opening visits when you see them in person. Ilulissat is a fine base for icy explorations during a Greenland cruise, and a great place to start is the Ilulissat Icefjord, known as the Kangia Icefjord in the Greenlandic language.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004, this enormous cluster of icebergs is a humbling sight and can be viewed in various ways on our excursions: on an exciting kayaking trip, as part of a Nordic walking tour or up-close on an informative cruise – you can also sail through the icefjord at night for a special experience.

During your Ilulissat journeys, you’ll be able to view the Sermermiut icebergs, which separate from Sermeq Kujalleq (the world’s fastest-moving glacier) and drift into the icefjord. Try a hiking excursion to see some of these mighty icebergs from prime viewpoints.

GOOD TO KNOW

The great outdoors is even greater in Greenland

Greenland is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors, making Greenland holidays appealing for anyone who enjoys keeping active or trying new things – all in a stunning setting.

Whatever your interests, there’s sure to be an activity on one of our excursions that suits you. If you want to keep things on foot, try a bracing hike around a mountain – Quassussuaq – in Nuuk or scenic hiking routes around Lake Tasersuaq in Qaqortoq, or opt for a city walk for something more leisurely.

Pick up the pace on an orientation run with local residents, combining sightseeing with jogging for an exhilarating experience. Alternatively, hit the water to see Greenland’s scenery from a different perspective, perhaps on a kayak tour in Ilulissat that takes you to the magnificent Ilulissat Icefjord.

Back on land, stretch into a yoga session at Hotel Arctic, where you’ll hit the terrace (or the stylish indoor surrounds) for an invigorating class, with views of the landscape as you flex.

GOOD TO KNOW

Treat yourself to a taste of Greenland

There are many ways to enjoy Greenland, including through its cuisine and crafted drinks – an experience not to be missed. During your visit to Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, embark on an excursion to a local bar and restaurant, where you’ll choose from a selection of regional dishes to sample, alongside a tasting of three different locally brewed beers.

In Qaqortoq, delve into further flavours on a food and beer tour, where your guide will lead you to another locally loved restaurant. As you sample traditional foods that have been enjoyed by Greenlanders over the centuries, you’ll get to sip other delicious beers, this time from the Qajaq Brewery, which uses local ingredients and brews using water from Greenland’s extensive ice sheet.

Or you could combine your Qaqortoq foodie odyssey with a guided walk that supplies information about traditional Inuit culture. After the walk, you’ll head to a restaurant to try some of the foods you’ve just heard about from your guide.

POPULAR PORTS

Nuuk cruises

Greenland’s capital and the most northerly capital of a constituent state, Nuuk is a welcoming and enriching place.

A Nuuk cruise delivers essential Greenland experiences via our excursions. Take a boat trip to admire colourful wooden houses and rugged coast (look out for whales!), or sail to Sermitsiaq – an immense mountain – for life-affirming views. Further mountain vistas and views back across Nuuk await on a hike around Quassussuaq.

Learn about Greenland from the people who know it best – its residents. You can hear about Greenlandic life from a local family over coffee and cake, after a guided tour of key city sights.

Discover more on a trip to the cosy cabins of Inuk Hostels. You’ll listen to informed cultural insights, accompanied by traditional Greenlandic specialties.

POPULAR PORTS

Ilulissat cruises

Top of the list for many on an Ilulissat cruise is a journey to the otherworldly Ilulissat Icefjord, but get acquainted with the charming town first, as it’s a rewarding experience.

Our excursions let you explore Ilulissat via guided tour, discovering history and culture as you admire rows of wooden houses. Or rack up more steps on a Nordic walking tour and gaze over Disko Bay, an epic stretch of water that houses bowhead whales, and whose skies host an array of birdlife. For something different, try an excursion from Ilulissat out to the village of Oqaatsut, where you can meet some of Greenland’s sled dogs and learn about their role in local life.

As for the Ilulissat Icefjord – this spellbinding sprawl of icebergs is a bucket list trip. Choose how to tick it off with MSC Cruises excursions: paddle into it on a kayak session, hike out to view it on a guided trek or drift gently through it on a cruise.

POPULAR PORTS

Qaqortoq cruises

Qaqortoq is an arty place, perhaps first signified by the clusters of bright buildings peppering its hilltops – it’s also a prime location to get further acquainted with Greenlandic culture. An MSC Cruises excursion to a local resident’s home lets you hear about kaffemik ('via coffee'), a traditional and very social celebration to mark special occasions, featuring – amongst other things – coffee and cake, which you’ll sample.

Go deeper into Greenlandic history on a Qaqortoq cruise by sailing out to the ruins of Hvalsey Church, which dates back to the 14th century, when Norse communities had settled in the region – and learn more about Inuit history and heritage in Qaqortoq on a walking tour that ends at a local restaurant, where you can sit back and enjoy Greenlandic dishes.

Uncover Greenland fully with our insiders’ tips

1.

The midnight sun can further light up a Greenland visit. This fascinating phenomenon, whereby the sun doesn’t set, occurs during spring and summer in Greenland, between late April and late August. Witnessing the country’s landscapes with natural night-time illumination is a special experience.

2.

Take time to learn about Inuit culture, heritage and language (the word ‘kayak’, for example, originates from an Inuit word), allowing you to understand more about Greenland’s past and present. Expand your learnings by speaking to locals and visiting cultural venues and archaeological sites.

3.

You can view ancient artefacts in Greenland’s museums, including 15th-century mummies. The Greenland National Museum displays the mummies (from an abandoned settlement, Qilakitsoq) and Ilulissat Cultural History Museum has exhibitions on former Inuit settlement Sermermiut and polar exploration.
